On the road from Kounoupidiana to Horafakia, 17 km northeast of Chania, is the seaside resort of Stavros, which became particularly well-known through its screening in the 1964 Oscar-winning film starring Anthony Quinn.
The beach of Stavros stands out from the rest because of the special rock that overshadows it and around it, a bay is created where you can enjoy the sun and the sea. In the wider area of Stavros there are plenty of restaurants and cafes as well as many accommodation options. Stavros can be a starting point for excursions to the wider area of Akrotiri and to the nearby beaches such as Kalathas, Tersanas and Marathi.
For those who like visiting monasteries, it is worth visiting those of “Gouverneto” and “Catholic”.
Stavros is located 25 minutes from the airport of Chania and 35 minutes from the port of Souda, while regular transport is available (6 times a day) from Stavros to the center of Chania
